State Licensure Guide for Physician Assistants
Physician assistants (PA-C) are medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. The PA-C scope of practice describes the procedures, actions, and processes that a healthcare practitioner is permitted to undertake in keeping with the terms of their professional license. In most states, a physician assistant’s scope of practice is determined with the supervising/collaborating physician at the practice site, with state law guiding their decision. Many states are changing these practice acts to allow the physician to determine the scope of practice. At this time, all states require physician assistants to have some level of supervision or collaboration, ranging from continuous supervision to collaborative contact. Check with the medical board of each state as these laws are constantly changing.
