Timeline for your Nephrology Career Search

Finding a nephrology job that best aligns with your needs takes time and careful planning. We recommend that fellows begin researching and preparing for their searches no later than 12 months before graduation. We have included a brief timeline below to help get you started.

  • 12 Months prior to graduation – Prioritize and Prepare
    • Decide on career path
      • Private practice
      • Academia
      • Employment
      • Locum Tenens
    • Rank geographic priorities
    • Investigate state licensure requirements and length of time to obtain
    • Create a list of needs vs. wants
    • Modify CV for the type of job you want (ex. academic vs. private practice)
  • 9 Months prior to graduation – Search Activation
    • Contact DaVita SOURCE
    • Network with peers, attending physicians
    • Identify opportunities that match closest to your needs
    • Set up telephone and in-person interviews
    • Find a healthcare attorney licensed in the state you wish to practice
  • 6 Months prior to graduation – Final Steps
    • If you have found a position:
      • Finalize your contract if you have not done so
      • Finalize your state medical license
      • Start preparing documents needed for the credentialing process with your new practice
      • Maintain communication with your new practice
    • If your “dream job” hasn’t revealed itself just yet:
      • Consider re-evaluating your priorities
