Social Media and Your Job Search

Social Media and Your Job Search

Job hunting? CV ready? References on-call? Interview questions prepped? Social media looking sharp? Wait…what?!?! Never fear, SOURCE is here…

We live in a time where social media is commonplace, and often the first step today’s employers will take when considering a new physician associate is to “google” them. If you have never tried it before today, we suggest you do. What pops up? What does the Internet have to say about who you are as a future practice partner?

Take a closer look at your social media accounts and if need be create something that highlights your strengths and personality as a medical professional as well as the amazing person you are on the weekends! Many major employers have some kind of a social media presence. Our team here at DaVita SOURCE is very active on the big social sites: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. These common platforms provide us the opportunity to be real-time with fellows and physicians and as the latest election shows us, can be a very powerful thing. With immediacy comes some obvious and not-so-obvious pitfalls. Read on.

It’s almost too easy to upload that photo of you at the bar having a drink or two with friends. It’s equally easy to vent some frustration at someone who has wronged you in a status update. It’s normal, and sometimes necessary to connect with your peers in this way, but as a job seeker you need to take some precautions about how you might be perceived in the professional world.

Here are a few tips to consider when managing your personal social media accounts while engaging in your job search:

  1. Don’t forget to review your privacy settings so that you are only showing the world (and possibly your future boss) what you want them to see. This means limiting who can post on your wall or tag you in photos without your review or approval.
  2. Make sure that sites like LinkedIn are up to date with all of your experience and achievements while also making sure other accounts such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. are locked down so your posts can only be viewed by a pre-approved audience.
  3. And finally, connect with DaVita SOURCE on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn to stay up-to-date with job opportunities, professional development tips or just to say hello!
